Visiting Fellowships

Application process update

Due to the increasingly stringent UK government regulations which affect short-term overseas academic visitors, imposed by the UK Borders Agency, it is now not possible for a non-EU person to open a UK bank account for a 3-month fellowship residency, and visa applications take longer to process, with associated costs. Potential applicants from non-EU countries are advised to contact the SRU for advice, as the situation remains fluid and new regulations can be brought in at short notice. We will be reviewing the arrangements for the visiting fellows programme after the current round.

Visiting Fellowships

Two residential stipendiary fellowships are offered annually for scholars, UK-based or overseas, who have completed a doctorate (or appropriate final degree) and who are undertaking research for publication in the arts of Africa, Oceania or the Americas. Advanced doctoral candidates may be considered in some circumstances.

Applications are welcome from scholars in such fields as anthropology, art history, archaeology, history and related disciplines. Younger scholars as well as established senior figures will be considered. Applications are reviewed by an external selection committee. The fellowships are usually tenable for three months to coincide with the UK academic calendar. Fellows are provided office space and access to SRU facilities.

Research Associateships

These are offered on a non-remunerative basis, allowing visiting scholars use of office facilities, the Robert Sainsbury Library and the opportunity to participate in seminars. Research associateships can be of any duration.

For further information please contact the Admissions Secretary.
