Resources & Student Life

Students have at their disposal a wealth of resources and activities which enhance their experience at the Sainsbury Research Unit and in Norwich.  In addition to weekly seminars by postgraduates and senior scholars organised by the SRU or the School of Art History and World Art Studies, regular talks and events of interest are common throughout campus, from the Sainsbury Centre to the various academic departments.

The University of East Anglia is well known for its commitment to higher education, student support and cultural diversity.  UEA has more than 9000 undergraduate students and nearly 4000 postgraduates, of which nearly a thousand are from outside the European Union.  In recent National Student Surveys, UEA ranked at the top of mainstream universities in terms of student satisfaction, reflecting our commitment to students, their education and well-being during their time here.

The university is located in parkland on the western outskirts of Norwich. The campus is largely made up of modern, award-winning buildings by Denys Lasdun, Norman Foster and Rick Mather.  Recent building initiatives have included enlarging the main library (with emphasis on up-to-date computing and study facilities) as well as making new and affordable student accommodations.

Housing is available on campus for students, fellows and visitors. This ranges from single rooms with shared kitchen and other facilities to self-contained one- or two- bedroom apartments. The Accommodation Office can provide detailed information regarding visits and on-/off-campus housing.  University facilities exist for health services, childcare, student financial advice and careers counselling.  The campus features amenities such as shops, bookstores, banks, restaurants, pubs, a post office and a travel agent.  The campus also has venues for gigs and dancing, as well as East Anglia’s largest swimming and sports centre for fitness and athletic activities.

Just fifteen minutes away from campus (by bicycle, car, bus) is the city of Norwich.  The city centre maintains a fine architectural heritage, including a Norman cathedral, castle and open square with covered market.  In addition to a diverse range of restaurants, it has several museums, theatres and cinemas, and a wealth of shopping venues (high street, malls, and boutiques).  Norwich is especially renowned for the number and quality of its medieval churches and pubs.  Dancing and merriment can also be had at various clubs in the city centre.  Cambridge and London (and airports) are easily accessible by train, coach or car, and nearby Norwich Airport services both national and international flights, especially to Europe.  Regular bus services connect the campus to the city centre.

The landscape of East Anglia is varied and includes woodlands, rivers connecting with a series of small lakes to form the 'Broads' and a dramatic coastline.  Outdoor activities, such as walks, sightseeing (castles, stately homes, museums) and bicycling, are common throughout the region.
