Graduate Careers
Since 1988, students who received SRU Master’s and PhD degrees have had notable success in their subsequent careers in the UK and beyond.
Many MA students have secured jobs in the museum, education and arts sector, frequently back in their home nations and communities. Many also continue into the PhD programme, here at SRU or elsewhere. The SRU’s close attention to student progress and needs, high quality teaching, a flexible curriculum, and emphasis on transferable skills in writing, oral presentation, research practices and organisation are crucial for success in the university and the workplace.
PhD students have produced high-calibre doctorates in anthropology, art history and archaeology. Some have won competitive postdoctoral research positions, including with The British Museum and Musee du quai Branly, and others have obtained much sought-after curatorships in England, Kenya, Netherlands, Scotland, Switzerland, USA, as well as tenure-track academic positions in the UK, USA and Canada.
The great, distinctive virtue of the SRU is its small, close-knit community that works together to connect internationally. Housed in the Sainsbury Centre for Visual Arts, the stimulating environment of postgraduate students, staff and visiting researchers ensures that a student’s learning always develops in unison with opportunities for networking and support from peers as well as university staff. Those who come to SRU, whether with a recent Bachelor’s degree or after some time away from formal education, find their experience nurturing and memorable.
